The Peristat Visual Field Test

Is your peripheral vision healthy?

The Peristat

The Importance of Peripheral Sight
20/20 vision does not always mean healthy eyes. In fact, many people with glaucoma or other peripheral sight dysfunction can be virtually blind despite 20/20 visual acuity. There are many eye problems that “hide” in the corner of your sight without impacting your reading vision. Glaucoma, stroke, and sometimes brain tumors can cause subtle peripheral defects without symptoms. Unsuspected, people lose sight irreversibly until it is too late.
Peristat can change the odds against Glaucoma
There are more than 3 million people with Glaucoma in the US alone and more than 80 million worldwide. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in both the developed and underdeveloped world. Public health research shows that more than half of all people affected are unaware and undiagnosed, even if they have received a quick eye check for glasses. Glaucoma is often called “the silent thief of sight” because it hides in a “quiet” blind spot in the periphery of your vision. While the eye pressure test can be helpful in diagnosing glaucoma, close to 50% of all glaucoma patients present without elevated pressure, making the diagnosis particularly challenging. Peristat is a screening test of your visual field which is designed to detect subtle changes caused by glaucoma, stroke or other conditions early on before vision is irreversibly lost.
What is Peristat?
Peristat is a physiologic test of visual field function. This is also known as perimetry – a diagnostic medical test routinely used by eye doctors to check the peripheral sight for early signs of diseases such as glaucoma. Delivered via the keepyoursight telemedicine platform, Peristat is a 5 minute sensitivity scan of the visual field which puts the precision and sophistication of cutting edge telemonitoring technology right at your fingertips. In a clinical study, Peristat demonstrated 90% accuracy to detect moderate to severe visual field defects (Curr Eye Res. 2005 Jan;30(1):1-6). While helpful and empowering, online screening is not in any way a substitute for an eye exam by a licensed eye doctor.
Who needs Peristat?
Visual field defects from glaucoma and other conditions are much more common in people over 50 when age-related problems begin to occur. In fact, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Optometric Association recommend routine vision screening for people over 50.
